Primary 5 & 6
Preparing Students for the Next Step
Primary 5 and Primary 6 mark an important stage in every child’s educational journey. At Swiss School in Singapore, we prepare students not only for the next academic level, but also for the greater independence, confidence and responsibility that come with secondary school.
Children who turn ten or eleven before 31 August are eligible for Primary 5 or 6. Our language of instruction is German, following the curriculum of the Canton of Zug.
Preparing for Secondary School at UWCSEA
A key focus of Primary 5 and 6 is preparing students for a smooth transition to Secondary 1 at United World College of South East Asia (UWCSEA). As students approach secondary school, our English programme is progressively expanded, helping them develop the language skills and confidence needed for an international learning environment.
Through increasingly independent learning, project work and a broad range of experiences, students are encouraged to take greater ownership of their learning and prepare for the challenges and opportunities ahead.
French as an Additional Language
French is introduced as an integral part of the weekly timetable in Primary 5 and 6, with two French lessons per week. Students learn using the Dis-donc! teaching material and develop their foundational French language and communication skills.
Together with German and English, this gives our students the opportunity to develop a strong multilingual foundation during their primary school years.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Our holistic primary school programme combines academic learning with creative, physical and social experiences. Students take part in:
- Music
- Arts and crafts
- Artistic design
- Sports and physical education
- Project-based and experiential learning
The annual class camp in Indonesia or Malaysia is one of the highlights of Primary 5 and 6. Our Adventure Week, combined with a Writer’s Camp led with the support of professional writers, gives students the opportunity to explore new environments, work collaboratively and develop their creativity and confidence.
High-Quality Learning Materials
Across all subjects, we use up-to-date teaching materials and books to support effective, engaging and age-appropriate learning. Our teachers select resources that help students deepen their knowledge while developing the skills needed for independent learning.
Assessment and Parent Communication
Students receive an interim report after the first semester and a final school report with grades for all subjects at the end of the school year.
Parents are also invited to one individual parent meeting each school year, providing an opportunity to discuss their child’s academic progress, personal development and preparation for the next stage of their education.
By the end of Primary 6, students leave Swiss School with a strong academic foundation, growing independence and the language, social and learning skills needed to confidently take their next step into secondary education.
